Shams Community

In the heart of Jabal Amman, opposite to books@ caffe you will find a hidden staircase that will lead you to a world of infinite possitibilities oh and an awesome view of the city center skyline. You will walk down the colourful staircase into this heartwarming space where everybody is welcome to join, mingle and get to know each other. A model That is much needed in Jordan.

As soon as you get down to the courtyard, you will be greeted with a smile and kick off your first conversation. You will get to meet people not only from different parts of Jordan but from different parts of the world. This is where you see people join from totally different cultures and backgrounds. You get to bump into the different kinds of Jordanians, expats, whether they are involved with INGO’s, diplomats, military, backpackers or even arabic students. The broad diverse mix will get you to meet people from countries you might have not even heard of. The point of the matter is that everyone is welcome to join.

Shams usually hosts a Monday dinner & dialogue day. This is where you get to “share a homemade meal and a meaningful conversation”. The meals are usually prepared by the lovely residents of shams. They can differ from time to time as the residents are usually volunteers who are willing to help at shams full time in exchange for free accommodation. The diverse range of residents are generous enough to share their delicious local recipies and you will always get to find a vegan and veggie friendly meal. Once you fill up your plate, you can head in and join your group and discuss the days topic of interest.

You start off by introducing yourself to everyone. You then get a cup filled with small papers to read out loud. They usually cover an idea that can spark an open discussion on the topic of interest where people can speak freely without any form of judgement. It gets even more interesting when people disagree and learn from one another. This is exactly how Shams aims on creating a helpful community to promote change by sharing and inspiring each other to change lives for the better.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the Shams family, please follow the Shams Community facebook page in order to check for the organised events. Other events include, dinner in the dark, and other more outdoor hiking/mediation oriented events over the course of the weekends. You will usually be required to fill in a google document in order to confirm attendance so that Shams can ensure enough food and space will be provided for everybody.
